Peter M. Mututwa,
Vice President Mr. Peter Munyinda Mututwa began his engineering career after graduating from the University of Zambia with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in civil engineering in 1989. After a one (1) year work experience with Ove Arup & partners - Zambia, a subsidiary of the UK based company that designed the opera house in Sidney, Australia, he was awarded a graduate scholarship to study civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. He graduated in 1991 with a master’s degree in civil engineering and later moved to Los Angeles, CA. Peter resumed his work experience in 1991 after joining the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) in Los Angeles, CA. During his career with CALTRANS he worked on numerous highway design projects as a Transportation Engineer in the project development and construction departments. One of his notable accomplishments at CALTRANS involved the improvements on the I-5 freeway between the Orange County line and the LAX airport. Several sound-walls, on & off-ramps and drainage facilities were designed and constructed to improve this section of the I-5 freeway. In 1995 he moved to Omaha, NE to work for Valmont Industries, Inc. which is a manufacturing company specializing in the design and manufacture of steel & aluminum lighting, communication & irrigation structures as a project design engineer. Peter worked in the Transportation department and designed numerous lighting and traffic control structures for various municipal and commercial clients. Three (3) notable projects include the 185’ high-mast lighting poles for the Oklahoma university football stadium, the first 85’ mast arm traffic signal structure in Miami, FL, which also withstood hurricane Andrew and the lake Tahoe ice skating rink decorative light poles. In 1999, during the telecommunication industry drought, Peter left Valmont and joined the Montgomery county government in Iowa as the county engineer. He joined the county right after the 1999 floods in western Iowa which were under a state of emergency declaration by the governor. Peter worked very closely with FEMA to secure emergency funds to rebuild two large bridges in the county and several drainage structures in the county to protect the roads and the farm lands. Valmont decided to re-call Peter in 2001, and was hired to be the systems/sales engineer in the transportation department once again. Peter wrote and developed many pole specifications and was most notably involved with the 2001 AASHTO pole design code. He made over 50 presentations to municipalities, consultants and other manufactures regarding the new requirements and some of the in-house research pertaining to the new pole design code. Finally, in 2006 Peter longed for the warm California weather which reminded him of his home country in Zambia. California was Peter’s “first love” right after graduation as it were, so he decided to return to California upon joining Omni Design Group, Inc. which is a consulting firm specializing in civil, architectural, surveying & landscape designs. Peter is married to Ita and they have three (3) lovely children, Sanana, Peter & Nate.
